Pink Floyd

Who are Pink Floyd?

Pink Floyd is the name of a British rock band founded in 1965. The original constellation was Syd Barrett (guitar), Roger Waters (bass guitar), Nick Mason (drums) and Richard Wright (keyboards). In the first few years Syd Barrett was the main creative force of the band, but his experiments with drugs and his general instability led to his departure from the band in 1968. He was replaced by an old friend, guitarist David Gilmour. After some time it was clear that Roger Waters would now become the main song writer of Pink Floyd as the band began a second era. Development in musical style and experiments topped with the artistic milestone Dark Side of the Moon (1973).

Another huge milestone was the Wall (1979) which was made into a giant stage show and even a movie. After the Wall, it was clear that the friendship and collaboration of the band mates were worn out. Rick Wright left Pink Floyd before the next album the Final Cut. It was after this album Roger Waters made it clear that he would no longer be a part of the band - and therefore saw Pink Floyd as dissolved. After long trials in the late 80's, David Gilmour and Nick Mason won the legal right to continue using the name "Pink Floyd". For this a new company was formed with the official name "Pink Floyd Music Ltd. 1987". A new album was released with David Gilmour in the lead and Rick Wright contributed to the album as a session musician. On the following album and tour Wright was once again officially a member of Pink Floyd.

Check out the section: Who is who, If you want to know more about the people in the Pink Floyd universe. Or read why Pink Floyd is among the best selling bands in history.

Do Pink Floyd still exist?

Pink Floyd does still exist, but the band has not produced new material for several years and the last tour was in 1994. A 'Best of..' compilation was released in 2001.

In 2005 the 4 bandmates was finally again seen on stage performing as Pink Floyd. Most of us had never really beleived it would ever happen but the Live 8 concert seemed to be a good occasion to put away the past. Pink Floyd with Roger Waters performed 4 songs as the higlight of the concert, but there are still no plans of new albums or tours.

Roger Waters is still very active with his solo career. He is working on new albums and is still performing Pink Floyd material on his tours. Also David Gilmour has been performing live during 2002, releasing a new album in 2006.

Will Pink Floyd make a new album/video/tour soon?

I don't know, so please don't write to ask me :o) It will be on the news page as soon as I have confirmed news of any Pink Floyd related release.

Are the Pink Floyd movies and concerts available on DVD?

So far only The Wall, Roger Waters In the Flesh and David Gilmour in concert has been released on DVD. They are all excellent, so you should deafinitely get them. I don't know WHEN or IF the older Pink Floyd films and concerts will be released on DVD. Check frequently on the film page and the news page. Any news will be on this site as soon as I have confirmed information on new releases.

General information About this site

Is this the official Pink Floyd website?

No, this is not an official website for Pink Floyd, but it is probably the biggest source for Pink Floyd information available on the web. You can find the official web sites on the links page.

Who made this website?

The Pink Floyd HyperBase is designed, edited and maintained by Jacob Crawfurd. I am an almost normal guy living in Denmark (No, not Germany or Sweden - Denmark is a small country in between). I work with web design, multimedia- and video production among other things. This site started out as my first experiments with HTML and JavaScript. It is still my playground/test site for trying out new ideas for user-interface and web techniques. See also: About the Pink Floyd HyperBase

It amuses me to keep this site up-to-date, but Pink Floyd is not "my life". Check out my personal homepage on crawfurd.dk if you want some clues to what other things goes on in my head.

How do I contact the webmaster?

You can send me an e-mail by using the contact page. Please allow a few days for me to answer. If you send me a normal e-mail always remember to write a suitable subject line and DO NOT send attachments of any kind! I receive a lot of spam and any strange looking e-mail goes directly in the trash. If you don't receive an answer, your mail has probably been deleted by error. Please, try again. Again... the best way to contact me is by using the contact page.

If you have general questions about Pink Floyd be sure to check this faq and the site in general, before writing. I am sorry, but I do not have time to be a "Pink Floyd Oracle" -and I do not know what Roger had for lunch prior to a concert in 1976.

Can I set up a link from my own site?

Yes, any link it very much appreciated. See linking to the Pink Floyd HyperBase.

What are the sources for this site?

The sources for this site are the sleeve notes, albums, books, press releases and huge piles of articles and interviews. See a list of the most important sources here. Thanks to the people who has been mailing me with corrections and updated information.

No. There are no illegal music-files for download from this site. Buy the album! However... it is possible to listen to music samples from most of the albums before you place your order. Click on the 'buy from Amazon' links from any item and follow the instructions for listening to music samples.

I have found something wrong on a page, what should I do?

Please make sure your information is correct and then write me. Please remember to write the sources for the information you send.

If you experience technical errors on this site I would also like to know. See: reporting technical errors.

How do I get around on this site?

The main menu on the start page is the natural place to start. Click on the section you want to explore. Each section (e.g. Trax and recordings) has numerous subpages, and each page has hyperlinks connecting it to related information on this site. It should be possible navigating entirely through the hyperlinks.

The colored bars in the top and bottom of each page, gives you a quick way back to the main menu and the start page for the current page. You will also find links to the search page and the navigator.

How do I use the 'navigator'?

'Launch' the Navigator by clicking on the navigator-link from the top of any page on the Pink floyd HyperBase. The Navigator is a small window with a menu. It enables you to make quick jumps to the main sections of the site.

What is the structure of this site?

I have tried to keep a strict logical structure of the site. The sitemap is an outlined index of the entire site. Take a look at it if you are lost or want some kind of overview.

For some albums you can choose from buying CD, Casette or Vinyl. You also have to consider if you should buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. If you are buying videos or DVDs you should read this important note.

Should I buy from Amazon in USA or Europe?

You can do as you like, but you should not the differences in tax and shipping. Not all items are available from both shops. If you are located in Europe you should try placing your orders at Amazon.co.uk. All others will probably prefer Amazon.com. Read more about shopping here.

If you are buying videos or DVDs you should read this important note.

What is the price / Are there extra charges from shopping here?

I do not list prices on this site because they change very quickly. Follow the shopping links and get the correct price directly from Amazon. Be aware of taxes and shipping rates.

The Pink Floyd HyperBase is affiliated with Amazon. That means a small percentage of your shopping will be paid to the Pink Floyd HyperBase.
